February is off to a fine start and the hot issues this month are the proposed changes to the BC Government’s Land Act and the introduction of Indigenous Protection and Conservation Areas (IPCA) and the apparent self-declaration of IPCAs by local indigenous groups without approval of the BC government.

These two issues are of concern not only to ATVBC and the potential impacts on members and our ability to use the back country, but also to just about every other group that uses Public lands for recreation activities.

Working with the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORCBC), ATVBC and other groups attended a virtual meeting with Minister Nathan Cullen, Minister of Land, Water, and Resource Stewardship, to address the concerns on both these subjects. The minister and his staff assured those in attendance that the government was not moving forward without consultation with the citizens of BC. As a follow up to this meeting, the BC Powersports Coalition (BCPSC) and 4WDABC have written to ORCBC requesting assistance with asking the government to provide resources to enable Public land users to manage the proposed changes that may be coming with the IPCAs.

The two groups have also drafted a letter to the Honourable George Heyman MLA, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy regarding IPCAs, expressing both our concerns and urging the provincial government to provide our associations and volunteers with the necessary tools and resources to comprehend these changes, including providing clarity on the process for the creation, management and communications of IPCAs in British Columbia and to further allow us to offer feedback, and access training where required.

ATVBC will be providing more information to our members as it becomes available.

On another topic, ATVBC is committed to being present at 6 tradeshows this year, with the help of local clubs in the area. They are:
