We are in the heat of the summer and sadly we are experiencing the worst wildfire season on record (according to the BC Wildfire Service). Its very dry out there for sure and we want to remind our riders to be extra vigilant when going out on the trails.

Currently the BC Wildfire Service is fighting over 500 fires around the province. Many riders may not realize that when there is a fire close by you are not allowed to be in the area so to allow for fire crews to establish fire guards etc. The best way to know if you are heading into an area that is off limits is to check in with the BC Wildfire Service active fire map online at: https://wildfiresituation.nrs.gov.bc.ca/map

OR download the BC Wildfire service MOBILE APP to stay up to date.

Our annual Board face-to-face planning is underway for October for the Board to complete their new Strategic Plan for the next 3-5years. We will be hosting a few keynote speakers from Rec Sites and Trails and Outdoor Rec Council to collaborate with our board before they go into their strategic planning sessions. A copy of the final strategic plan will be shared with our membership in early 2024!

In case you missed it, we had a great article collaboration with Riders West and our partners at Canadian Quad Council on the topic of 2-up riding and the dangers of carrying passengers on 1 rider machines. Here is a link to the article. How to identify which ATVs can carry a passenger, and which are fit | RidersWest (riderswestmag.com)

This was shared across the country and into the united states thanks to our friends at NOVHCC. How To identify Which ATVs Can Carry A Passenger, And Which Are Fit For Only One Rider – NOHVCC

The ORV grant announcements have now been made public. This year 23 ORV projects from around the province were funded in support of ORV Trails and volunteer led projects putting in $400,000 in investment into the ORV community.

The ORV Trail Fund is in its 6th year of operation and has awarded approximately $1.3M in support of ORV Trail projects from across BC. The ORV Trail Fund is supported by RSTBC, the BC Snowmobile Federation, the BC Off-Road Motorcycle Association, ATVBC Quad Riders Association of BC and volunteer groups from communities all over the province.

We look forward to seeing all these projects come to life over the next year!!

Congratulations to all the recipients!

This year ATVBC was able to increase our safety program funding from the ORV to $33k giving us the opportunity to build on our safety program with the addition of new safety trainers and a renewed safety program, more details on this program to be shared in the fall.

The AGM was a great success this year, special thanks to the AGM Task Force members for all their hard work, to our guest speaker Kim Reeves, President of the 4Wheel Drive Association of BC and to Rachela Pollock with Capri Acera Insurance for joining us for our meet and greet with the club presidents and new board.

Special thanks to our amazing partners, corporate members and sponsors for supporting ATVBC all year long and especially during our recent Annual Poker Ride and Annual General Meeting in Princeton BC. We couldn’t have done it without you!

If you are a member of ATVBC (and you should be!!), don’t forget to check out our website to see how you can save $$$ at many of our amazing corporate members! I also encourage you to follow our social media channels to learn more about the ATVBC affiliated club events and activities and find a way to join in on an activity during your travels this summer.

During our AGM we presented our members with the opportunity to join a few of the ATVBC committees including our Membership Committee, Events Committee, Communications Committee and the most important, the Lands Use Committee. We want to thank those members who put their names forward to join this committees. We will be working to reach out to those members to include them in the next committee meetings. As the summer is busiest for most, we will try and schedule one meeting of each of these committees before end of August! If you are interested in joining one of these committees please reach out to me at [email protected] and I can send you more details!

Licensing project – if you attended our AGM you would have heard all about our current licensing research project, working with communities around the province to gather information on who would be interested in adopting local bylaws for atv/utv access to amenities. This is not a new project by any means, we worked hard on this back in 2019 with our support of Resolution B121 at the UBCM in Sept 2019. Due to covid and other factors, ATVBC work on this project has sat idle. We are bringing it back with an additional approach, working with local govt to gather interest and support them to develop their bylaws with samples from other communities and support from local clubs, RCMP and other stakeholders. If your local community or local club is interested in participating, please reach out to me directly!

Last but not least, the new member survey, we talked about it for months, then I promised it to be launched last month, and then technology and I had a bit of a disagreement. While I am not the most tech savy person, I did promise a product and after a few days of wanting to throw the computer, it should be good to go this next week…. Fingers crossed… so if any member out there has a love for survey monkey and would like to show me the ropes I am all ears!!!

Until next month, ride safe, ride smart!

Cheers,

Kristin Parsons
