The ATVBC Safety Program is your go-to resource for off-road vehicle (ORV) safety training, education, and best practices in British Columbia. ATVBC is committed to promoting safe, responsible, and sustainable ORV use through comprehensive training programs, rider education, and community engagement.

Our Safety Program is designed to support riders of all ages and skill levels, ensuring everyone can explore BC’s trails safely and responsibly. Whether you’re a new rider or an experienced enthusiast, we provide the resources and training to enhance your skills and knowledge.

ATVBC encourages all riders and families to:

  • Ensure operators meet the legal age and licensing requirements.
  • Follow manufacturer recommendations regarding passenger capacity, age, height, and weight restrictions.
  • Always wear properly fitted helmets and appropriate safety gear.
  • Use seat belts and safety restraints where equipped.
  • Provide active adult supervision for young riders.
  • Complete certified rider training whenever possible.
  • Ride at speeds appropriate for terrain and conditions.
  • Conduct pre-ride safety checks before every outing.

Safe and responsible riding is a shared responsibility. Every rider, parent, guardian, and recreational user has a role to play in helping prevent future tragedies and ensuring that our trails and riding areas remain safe for everyone.

ATVBC remains committed to promoting rider education, responsible recreation, and a strong culture of safety throughout British Columbia.

“No ride is ever so important that safety can be compromised. We encourage all riders to make safety their first priority every time they get behind the handlebars or wheel of an off-highway vehicle.”

1. ORV Safety Training

ATVBC provides Canada Safety Council (CSC) sanctioned safety training designed to educate riders on essential skills, risk awareness, and responsible riding habits. This includes:

  • Youth & Indigenous Training: With the support of our sponsors and grant funders, we aim to provide free safety training for youth and Indigenous communities to ensure accessibility and inclusivity.
  • Certified Instruction: Courses follow established safety guidelines to ensure riders are well-equipped with the necessary skills to operate an ATV or ORV safely. As an ATVBC member, you will receive special member rates on all ATVBC training opportunities.

2. Trail Ambassador Program

The Trail Ambassador Program promotes responsible riding and encourages a strong riding community. Trail Ambassadors are knowledgeable riders who help educate others on trail etiquette, environmental responsibility, and emergency preparedness.   Review the ATVBC TAP Program Manual and complete the TAP Questionnaire to be an ambassador in your area or reach out to learn more!

3.  Off-Road First Aid Kits

Available through our ATVBC online store, these kits ensure riders are prepared for emergencies while exploring BC’s trails. Developed in partnership with Search & Rescue BC to ensure the most commonly used or needed items are on board to prepare riders for most situations.

4. Dealer Safety Kit Program

ATVBC is proud to partner with participating dealers to distribute Off-Road Safety Kits as part of our safety initiative. When customers purchase their ATVBC membership at a participating dealership, they receive a complimentary off-road safety kit to help them stay prepared on the trails. While the contents of the kit do vary from year to year, the basics remain including a off road tire repair kit, duster buff, ATVBC safety resources, tire gauge and 2lt dry bag to keep all items safe and dry. This program is designed to encourage safe riding habits and ensure that every rider is equipped for emergencies.

5. Skill Building Partnership Program

ATVBC is proud to provide the Skill-Building Partnership Program to collaborate with industry experts across British Columbia to enhance rider education and safety. This initiative provides ATV riders with hands-on training opportunities led by experienced industry professionals at ATVBC events and special ATV club hosted workshops.

6.  Safety Signage Program

The Safety Signage Program supports the design, production, installation, and maintenance of safety signage, all of which must be ordered through ATVBC-approved providers.  ATVBC Safety Signage Guidelines have been developed to provide clubs with the resources required to ensure they are meeting government standards.

7. Safety Resources & Education

  • Safety Brochure: Our safety materials cover riding techniques, emergency preparedness, environmental stewardship, and legal requirements for ORV use in BC.
  • Workshops & Community Engagement: ATVBC collaborates with local clubs and industry partners to host workshops and provide ongoing education on ORV safety. If you are looking to host a workshop or to find out when there is a workshop in your area, contact [email protected]
